Haw River Trip Report

June 15th, 2019

Paddlers:  Larry Ausley, Wayne Jones, Puyen De la Cruz, David Freeman, John Kriener, Greg Vari, Bryce Linacrce, Frankie McMahon, and myself

As expected another great day on the Lower Haw.  We had 9 first lap and 6 hang in for 2nd lap and I'm pretty sure by that point everyone except David Freeman was done, he just occupied Eddys watching us all get worked over by the features….lol.  To use the words of Puyen it was just over 2800 first run and just under 2800 CFS second run, nice beautiful sunny day with definite chance of Diarrhea!  With that being said we have Wayne "He (The) Haw" Jones as he named himself who swam yesterday as a test subject. So for those of you that got Moosejawed and spent some time in the water and poor Frankie McMahon who spent alot of time upside down you know if Wayne gets sick you have a day to prepare yourselves!  As for Frankie he did go upside down at least 4 times but to his credit he was able to hold enough air to attempt 3 rolls each time and luckily 2 of the 4 he able to come up assisted and most importantly he was able to get his first combat roll coming up at the bottom of Moosejaw.  The great Larry also came out for 2 laps and that second lap he fell in love with rocks to include a splat and sat on one rock for a couple minutes but I wasn't able to get the camera out until he was trying to get his kayak off the rock and another rock at bottom of moosejaw that kept getting in his was as he was showing us some side surfing. It was Greg Vari's first decent on Haw so he got a great introduction level and if I'm not mistaken he fell victim to the shallow waters after Moosejaw.   John also made it out with us and fell victim to Moosejaw but to his defense the tree he uses to line up on has moved on him. Sorry Bryce I don't remember anything funny about you, you must have been hiding the whole time…lol. I personally stepped up in the world and finally got an upgraded paddle so I didn't look like the newbie with the Rio, however that Sho Gun gave me a whole new workout. I also paddled my Remix 1st lap and then Burn the second and surprisingly I'm thinking I like the Burn better at least on the Lower Haw anyway.   Overall I think everyone really got in there and worked all the features and had a great time, hopefully we all come out unscathed by the possible effects of the mighty Haw's infection.
