We had a good, scrapey morning adventure on the upper part of Richland Creek. I have done further downstream in the past and had high hopes for the upper part, just southeast of Asheboro, NC. Unfortunately, it did not rain …

Route: Chalk Banks to Cypress Bend Winery (access by special permission). This started and ended as a great day on the river with kayak paddlers and staff from Lake Rim Park in Fayetteville (9 people total). However, when we got about ¼ mile south of US-401 ( Raeford Rd) we ran into a huge clearcut on the west bank. This goes on for 0.9 miles as the crow flies or at least 1.25 miles on the river. Google Earth imagery shows this as being cut about March of 2018.
River: Rocky (Cape Fear River Basin)

What a difference a dam can make, or rather the lack of one.
Nice day on the water among CCC friends and we may have even seen the birth of another addict to the sport.
We had 1 novice, couple intermediates, and some advanced paddlers along with a couple instructors and an instructor educator. Hmm, great opportunity for some newer paddlers. Decent weather and good conditions for a better than average wave shape for surfing (pool level around 19.3' with flow of 2600cfs).
