On Memorial Day we did a trip down the New river in Virginia from the Bridle Creek Bridge(near the Mouth of Wilson) to the Hwy 21/221 bridge.  This was an 8'ish mile paddle that was mostly class 2 with a couple of 2+ish rapids thrown in. We had a group of 5 – Keith Raker, Theresa Raker, Joandra Proia, Lim Lenburg and Judy Milakovich.  It was a perfect day of paddling with beautiful weather, sufficient water flow with a nice picnic thrown in for good measure.

The trip was posted with a minimum preferred water level of 1' or above. The gauges held all week before the trip at around 2.5', so I figured we would have at least 2' by the weekend. We met at the visitor's center on Saturday morning and the folks there were reporting a level of -1.35'! To say the least. we were surprised, but a quick smartphone check indicated that the gorge was steady at 0.87' – a good, fun level with only minimum intimidation potential.

Having failed gauges 101 class, and having had to cancell the Tuckaseegee West Fork trip, I decided to plan a New River Gorge Trip. We had four paddlers sign up, the same people that were interested in the prior trip.
