Despite some less than optimal weather for paddling with younger folks, a hardy group of family paddlers showed up for the 11th edition of Families Paddle Too at Smoky Mountain Meadows for the Memorial Day Weekend. We had families from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Over the weekend groups organized for trips on Lake Fontana, the Town Tuck, the Tuck Gorge, the Nantahala, and the Pigeon. We even had a group of teenagers who logged their personal first descent on the Big Laurel.

Back at camp there was plenty of fun for the kids, games to play, hot dogs to roast, ice cream to scoop and s’mores to roast. I’d like to thank Jen Cope, Melissa Bertenthal, Ian Brewer and Marcos Harkness for rounding up the grub and helping to make the magic happen. It has been a lot of fun to build on the early editions of FPT and I’m pleased to say that the next generation is ready to take the reins. Melissa Bertenthal and Ian Brewer have agreed to be co-instigators for 2024.
