Vote: Revising the voting period

Under the current bylaws, the amount of time to complete a member vote is:
-The time it takes for the Board to determine and define the vote
-a 15 day notification period
-a 15 day voting period

This bylaws change proposal is to decrease the voting window to a 7-day notification period, and a 7-day voting period. Communications are a lot faster then when this original voting period was set in the bylaws. This permits the CCC to be more dynamic in accomplishing things, while still providing time for members to vote and comment prior to the vote. Using weeks also makes it a bit simpler on the calendar.

The proposed revisions are:

Section 7. Issues requiring a general membership vote shall be voted on during a designated voting period. A designated voting period shall be scheduled through a majority vote of the Board of Directors and communicated to the membership at least fifteen (15) seven (7) days in advance through the Club website. Such notice shall include the dates for a fifteen (15) seven (7) day voting period, the issue(s) at hand, and the mechanisms of voting. Ten members having cast ballots pursuant to the provisions of Article III, Section 1 shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business of the Club.

Voting will open Oct. 1 and close on Oct. 15.

  1. My first thought is that the idea dropping to a 7 day voting window concerns me. It’s not uncommon to travel for a week. And often with paddlers those trips are into the wilderness where internet access is not a reasonable expectation.

Are there some things in particular that need this extra time for our officers?

  2. Note it’s one-week notification, and then one-week voting, so there’s two weeks to know about it.

In candor, almost no members vote (like, < 20 of the ~ 800 members). And we don't exactly have THAT many members who wander into the wilderness for a week with no Internet. The congruence of both of those rapidly approaches 0. Right now it can take 6-8 weeks to get something voted on. It's just a really long time, and leaves a lot of people feeling like nothing ever gets done.

  3. I strongly echo what Rick has written. It takes forever to get anything done and frankly makes us look bad to other agencies when we are trying to be supportive.
