Land Purchase in the New River Gorge

The CCC Board of Directors voted to pledge $5,000 from the Conservation Fund to Arc of Appalachia, a non-profit trying to buy 8 tracts of land around the New River Gorge adjacent to the New River Gorge National Park, auctioned on June 30.

What a perilous but exciting day at the auction!! It all turned out in the end, but throughout nearly the entirety of the various positions, we were seriously worried that we were going to come home with nothing. Only in the last 15 minutes did the Arc’s “dark horse” surge back on the leaderboard and then we tried to breathe through the minutes until the clock ran out to see if someone would compete against us in the end. We prevailed and ended up with the winning bid for five of the eight parcels, totaling 1,980 acres, representing the Piney Creek parcels, Spruce Run, & the best of the Stretcher Neck Bluffs, literally our top priorities! Beckley is jubilant, and they can now connect their trail from the city all the way to the New River Gorge National Park. It was a marvelous team effort, and we were honored to work alongside WV Land Trust as our close partner.

Thank you for your role in winning this day for conservation and acquiring these 1,980 acres for preservation. Our landholdings just jumped up a miraculous 12% with this single acquisition!! Let’s all raise our voices in a loud cheer!
