Dispatch from CCC Basecamp #2 Jan 6, 2024

Note from the Pres.—3 things

Keeping Your Secrets; Better Information Flow; Board Meetings

  1. You can safely broach ugly stuff to the CCC Board

Did you know that there is one CCC Member that is legally required to protect, if possible, your anonymity if you want to broach something to the club or board?

“Section 16. Member-at-Large. The Member-at-Large shall:

(a) serve as a liaison between the Membership and the Board of Directors, serving as a conduit for suggestions, complaints, and concerns; keeping the sources anonymous when possible; and (b) serve, ex officio, as a member of the Board of Directors”

Susan Eda from Texas is trustworthy and solid. She is your Member at Large. She MUST keep your anonymity if you ask her to….if possible. And, she will, if at all possible. If, for safety or dire purposes, a dark matter needs to reach the sunlight, she’ll use excellent judgement and she’ll likely get your buy in first.

Don’t be reticent to reach out to her at member.at.large@carolinacanoeclub.org

  1. We can have A LOT MORE FUN together if we know what’s going on.

Thanks to Board Members Rick Steeves and Dave Johnson, you now see more information on the CCC email broadcast…. enabling you to get the gist of the info without having to navigate to the website and seek it out. I personally love seeing the Carolina Paddler articles pronto on my phone or screen without having to go to the CCC website ( though the website is definitive and official for housing our communications). If you’re reading this on Facebook, I would encourage you to sign up for the email again….and use it too. At some point a few years ago there was a murmur that one should not post on the email list. Not any more. Don’t be afraid to post on the email list. Not everyone does Facebook….though FB is wonderful for its users and the club page is awesome. Here’s how to sign up for the email list. Officers can post a more official announcement on the CCC webpage where it will hit all places….FB, Email, Discord, Twitter, and the CCC webpage (and RSS feed) too. If you need guidance, reach out to the webmaster Dave Johnson at: webmaster@carolinacanoeclub.org  or me.

  1. CCC Board Meetings Jan 9 and Jan 24

Your Treasurer and Secretary, Randy Dicello, has worked very hard to get us ready for budget discussions. Long story short, the need to upgrade our financial accounting systems landed in her lap and she is an unsung hero for the huge time commitment she has undertaken….with a determined and positive attitude. Please thank her next time you see her. Or before!

The board meets Jan 9 and 24th to discuss budgets but, see below—- if you have any big things for us to discuss or broach, pass them along to us!

In the spirit of communication, if you have any bombshell ideas, great suggestions or feedback, then don’t be reluctant to reach out. You can contact me or the Member at Large ( or any other board member). There is no ivory tower here. We’re just boaters like you. Speak up!

That said, don’t be surprised if we ask you to lead the project or help in some way! No, we won’t shame you if you decline…..unless you are a good friend in which case you will be mercilessly razzed and called names. More is better and many hands make light work! As we speak, Mort Balaz ( conservation chair) is posting a great idea and a need for some participation.

Don’t forget, 2024 is the year of FUN BOATING/CAMPING TIMES AND RECHARGING THE BATTERIES!

Section 3. Mission. Carolina Canoe Club is established to foster and promote the interest of those individuals who find recreation and relaxation …… to bring together paddlers of this region for companionship in group activities; to exchange information of special interest to all paddlers; to develop and conduct classes in all phases of cruising techniques and safety; and to act together toward the preservation of the wilderness character of our waterways by advancing public relations with governmental agencies and the public in general.

These purposes of the Club are promoted through its education programs…
