The Surf Sirens Scholarships are a key part of our mission to expand access and build a more inclusive and diverse community within the sport of kayak surfing and rock gardening. We recognize that financial barriers exist to participation and that historically, ocean sports—and kayak surfing/rock gardening in particular—have not reflected the broad spectrum of identities and voices that make up our coastal and river communities. We aspire to reduce financial barriers and create space for Sirens from all backgrounds to access high-quality instruction, mentorship, and the supportive community that Surf Sirens offers. Our goal is not only to increase participation but to empower more women to become leaders, educators, and role models in the sport.
This year, we have two need-based scholarships:
-
For individuals who are 30 or younger building a career or long-term path in paddlesports and outdoor leadership.
-
A more open scholarship for women-identifying individuals in general
What Scholarships Cover:
Registration to the event, ACA (American Canoe Association) insurance fee (if not an ACA member) and the camping fee at the Hobuck Beach Resort
Deadline for Submission: 11:59pm, June 4, 2026
Scholarship Eligibility and Review Criteria
We understand that identities, circumstances and attributes are complex, personal and diverse. If you feel you align with the spirit of this scholarship but aren’t sure whether you “fit” a listed category, we encourage you to apply.
Financial Need: The primary reason for the scholarship is to support the attendance of women-identifying individuals for whom finances are a barrier. All other elements listed below fall under this umbrella.
Representation and Diversity: 50%
Gender expansive representation is a primary aim of Surf Sirens. However, further expanding diverse representation in Surf Sirens is a high priority. Members of the Makah Tribe are particularly encouraged to apply, but we welcome applications from individuals across a spectrum of intersecting identities.
Community Impact and Leadership: 30%
How are scholarship recipients going to use this experience to impact the way they lead and contribute to the kayaking community and how do their goals and objectives align with the Surf Sirens mission to expand access and build a more inclusive and diverse community within the sport of kayak surfing and rock gardening?
Sense of Belonging and Personal Growth: 20%
How will this opportunity impact the individual’s sense of belonging in the kayaking community and their trajectory in the sport?
All applications will be kept confidential. The names of scholarship recipients will not be made public (unless the individual chooses to disclose that information), and application materials will only be reviewed by the designated scholarship committee. The Surf Sirens Organizing Committee will be aware of the recipients but will not review the application materials.
