Announcement of Upcoming Nolichucky Vote

This email serves to notify the membership of a vote that will be initiated in about 2 weeks (October 15).  The board is asking the membership  to approve a $5000 contribution to the Nolichucky Outdoor Recreation Association (NORA) (www.nolichucky.org/).

NORA [a 501(c)(3)] was formed by the group of people who have been advocating for the well being of the Nolichucky River since Hurricane Helene.  NORA is active in pushing to get access to the river (the putin is still closed but may open soon).  Their overall mission of NORA “is to connect the Nolichucky community to nature, to one another and to the places we call home.”  NORA has led work to clean up flood debris and plans to develop programs to make the Noli accessible to young people and to local community members who are interested in the river as a whitewater opportunity.  To date, they have supported 30 otherwise unemployed river guides to remove debris and removed 100 tons of trash from the river.
There is more work to do and the CCC board supports a contribution from funds already allocated in the club’s Conservation access fund.  For those of you who have not paddled the Noli, it is a 9 mile trip through a stunning remote gorge with about 9 class 3/4 rapids, and lots of class 2 water in between.
