Event Type

2024 is an Olympic Year. Canoe/Kayak Slalom is one of the events. Bryson City’s Evy Leibfarth is competing in three different slalom disciplines (K1, C1, EK). To my knowledge, no other 2024 Olympian is doing this.

Come out and try your hand on the Nantahala Racing Club’s slalom course behind NOC.  This is an active training site for Evy and other future, current and former Olympians. CCC has a long history of hosting slalom events.  This is an unofficial “Friendly” race, mostly self supported by participants. A challenging but not difficult course will be the setting. A timer will keep your time for you and a buddy will score your run down the course. Run time plus penalties = final score. Best score of 2 runs. This has worked well in the past as we can divide the field into two heats.  Bring whatever you are currently paddling. Race boats are not required.

Arrive at the check in table ready to go at 4:15 pm down by the NRC Racing Trailer to get your Number Bib. Participant’s meeting at 4:45 pm. First timed run at 5:00 pm, starting just above the Founder’s Bridge on river left. Two runs per paddler in the following format:

Heat A Run 1, Heat B Run 1, Heat A Run 2, Heat B Run 2.

Safety Volunteers will be on site to assist you if you have an out of boat experience.

No official prizes, but Cheerwine and Cheese Nabs will be distributed afterwards. Ladies, you should be done in time to join the 6 pm Ladies Night event across the river at NOC, fresh from paddling. It doesn’t get much more Boater Chic than that.

There will be an Introduction to Slalom Workshop on the course on Tuesday July 2 at 5 pm.

All participants in any Carolina Canoe Club (CCC) trip do so as common adventurers. The CCC or its individual members may coordinate paddling trips but no one is considered leader of a trip. As common adventurers, all participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether it is safe for them to participate on any particular water body, what equipment they need and use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are adequate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.

Individual coordinators for all CCC activities set requirements per their sole discretion. The CCC does not necessarily endorse or approve requirements set by coordinators.
