1) CCC officers and staff present
a) Ron Miller (President)
b) Joan Monnig (Cruise Chair)
c) Randy Welch (Conservation Chair)
d) Wayne Jones (Secretary/Treasurer) late
e) Barry Schmidt (Safety Chair)
f) Lorraine Burnham (Education Chair)
2) Ron called the meeting to order
3) First weekend after angling season is Boater Chick Festival
4) Membership – brochures nearly depleted, proposing a business card size membership info card.
5) Conservation
a) Randy Welch will not be running for the office next year
b) 19 people attended Tuck cleanup at Week of Rivers, location newspaper published at story on
the cleanup
c) Weldon proposed as a potential cleanup location.
d) Ken Kastorff posed a request to the club re: access to the Ocoee TVA relicensing agreement,
commercial companies must pay $ 4 per person to go towards $ 2 million loan amount.
e) AW will likely lead the way and outfitters and clubs will be asked to donate $ 20K for an
economic impact study in 5 years.
f) America Outdoors is similar to AW
g) CCC could get involved with access fee (Ron suggested $ 1,000)
6) Wayne gave a brief Treasurer’s Report – we have approx $ 15,000 between the checking and money
market account, and an annual balanced budget of around $ 14,000
a) Conservation contributions will be made at the end of the year in consideration of available
funds
7) Education
a) Peter van Giesen noted a change in policy by Red Cross regarding CPR/1st aid rentals
b) Red Cross will likely stop renting mannequins and DVDs for First Aid instruction
c) Suggested the club may purchase 4 mannequins and DVD for $ 600
i) Accessory lung bags – 50 for $ 20.
d) Spencer noted that a similar arrangement was approved with Morgan Randell at the Jan
meeting in 2011
e) A question was raised as to the expected useful life of the mannequins.
f) The board will look to the Chair for a proposal for the coming year
g) Ron suggested developing a policy that creates an incentive for instructors to teach in exchange
for First Aid/ CPR instruction
h) The current policy for instructors to recover a portion of their Instructor Certification expenses
i) Once an instructor has taught 3 classed, then the club reimburses ½ of the original cost
8) No member at large report
9) Lorraine noted that the club is a Paddle America Club, part of the American Canoe Association.
a) At our educational clinics, the ACA provides insurance
b) Each participant in a clinic is required to be either a member, or to purchase a $ 5 event
membership.
c) CCC members are encouraged to join ACA, for $ 30 ($ 40 membership minus $ 10 CCC discount)
10) Safety report by Barry Schmidt
a) Spring SWR clinic was cancelled due to lack of registration
b) 9 attended Essentials of River Safety during this Week of Rivers
c) The Fall SWR Clinic is scheduled for September 21, 22, 2012.
d) Ron clarified that although the 2 day SWR rescue clinic is titled Advanced Swift Water Rescue,
that does not mean that advanced boating skills are needed. In fact, no boating skills are
needed.
11) Nominating Committee
a) Allen Freeman agreed to join the Nominating Committee for the coming year.
b) Morgan, Wayne, Ron, Joan, Lorraine and Barry have agreed to run for their positions for the
coming year.
12) Amy Rae Fox not present for Paddler Report
a) Publication needs photos – preferred method is to post images to CCC Facebook
b) Nancy Christian – copy editor – noted that we have many more trip reports with the new
incentive policy
13) Cruise Committee report
a) An ongoing Cruise Committee report has been given daily during Week of Rivers, highlights
include the active participation of a dynamic group of committee members, tons of equipment
and discount contributions by sponsors, a full list of clinics, active participation by club
members, and a fantastic Pirates of the Tuckasegee trip.
b) Joan noted that the trip coordinator has the freedom to structure trips that suit the
coordinator’s needs, including a limit to the number of participants and flexibility of location
c) Any trip coordinator has the freedom to interview and exclude participants
d) Labor Day trip TBD – will remain flexible
i) WV has a limited range of options in Joan’s opinion
ii) Randy offered some lesser known alternatives in the area
e) Trips should be announced on the website – the listserv will be copied automatically
f) Fall Colors options – Balcony Falls, Upper New
14) Meeting adjourned
