Carolina Paddler December 2023 Table of Contents

“Big Drops Two” by Alton Chewning

The second article of the waterfalls series looks more at the techniques used in running the big drops.  Featuring expert Boyd Ruppelt (SEND) and our own wunderkind, Nathan Anderson.

“Paddling Gauge Revival” by Alton Chewning

A canoe, a ladder, a can of paint and several willing hands resurrect a paddling tradition.

“B-Side Streams: Suburban Creeking” by Zach Schiada

Zach adds to our knowledge of New Hope Creek as well as other nearby, but seldom ran streams.  Some real surprises!

“Taking the Measure of Rivers” by Alton Chewning

Two hydrologic technicians let us tag along as they take the measurements paddlers want to know, including how a 1.2 cfs stream can flood neighborhoods.

In January, Carolina Paddler will have articles by Zach Schiada, exploring more B-Side Streams and Gretchen Smith describing the North Carolina State Trails network.  One of our Board members will be recounting his bad day on the river. Another Board member wants to share a couple of his favorite books on paddling. All this and more in Carolina Paddler.
