Grief and Gratitude Sunset Paddle
Come slow down on the water with us. Unpack that grief. Stoke that gratitude.
This will be the first event of a monthly series I plan to run the rest of the calendar year. Exact time will vary but roughly speaking we’re looking at a sunset paddle the 3rd Sunday of the month. I look forward to varying the venue (I have club members wanting to help run these on the coast and the mountains), but our kickoff paddle will be from Fearrington Point at Jordan lake, a nice west-facing launch to enjoy the sunset.
The structure of this paddle is as follows: (1) dry land introductions, getting newbies helped if needed, (2) circling boats up on water for a group “grief session” offering each paddler the option as we go around to say some words about a grief in their life, ideally keeping each share to 2-3 minutes, (3) initiating a silent paddle, probably 30 minutes long, then (4) regrouping for a “gratitude session” and going back around for each paddler to have the opportunity to say some words about a gratitude in their life, and lastly (5) we finish out in a social (not silent) paddle, returning to the launch site.
The purpose of this is to build community and provide support.
There is no grief too small or too large to bring to this.
You can come and refrain from speaking if you prefer. I know the grief of some is truly beyond words at times. But, we want you to feel this is a space you can show up as you are and be supported, even in silence.

All participants in any Carolina Canoe Club (CCC) trip do so as common adventurers. The CCC or its individual members may coordinate paddling trips but no one is considered leader of a trip. As common adventurers, all participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether it is safe for them to participate on any particular water body, what equipment they need and use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are adequate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.
Individual coordinators for all CCC activities set requirements per their sole discretion. The CCC does not necessarily endorse or approve requirements set by coordinators.
