Event Type

This clinic is designed for paddlers who are already comfortable paddling Class III whitewater and want to improve the quality of their paddling. Emphasis will be on making lines cleaner, decisions more intentional, and movement through rapids more composed.

Location: French Broad, Section IX

Class Size: 10 Students

You may be ready for an Intermediate II clinic if you:

  • Paddle downriver on Class III with confidence and control
  • Can catch eddies and perform peel outs reliably in current
  • Have a reliable combat roll in Class III conditions
  • Can paddle continuously while adjusting lines and responding to river features

What You’ll Work On

Intermediate II clinics focus on refining fundamental skills and applying them more precisely in Class III whitewater.

Instruction commonly includes:

  • Cleaner, more efficient boat control
  • Managing speed and momentum through longer rapids
  • Linking eddy turns, ferries, and direction changes
  • Improved edge control and dynamic stability
  • Reading water and planning lines through continuous features

What to Expect

Clinic formats vary based on the river and the group. Most instruction takes place on the river, with coaching layered in as paddlers move through rapids and features.

Time is spent primarily on Class III sections, with an emphasis on continuous paddling, efficiency, and maintaining composure in more complex water.

Typical Rivers

Intermediate II clinics are often held on rivers such as:

  • Pigeon Gorge
  • French Broad Section IX
  • Middle Ocoee

Participants Leave Better Prepared to:

  • Paddle Class III rivers with increased precision and composure
  • Link moves and manage speed and momentum through longer rapids
  • Make cleaner line choices and adjust plans while in motion
  • Maintain control and awareness in more continuous or complex Class III water

As common adventurers, all participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether it is safe for them to participate on any particular water body, what equipment they need and use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are adequate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.
