CCC Security Alert

A heads up that the CCC officers are seeing repeated spear phishing attempts to (and theoretically from) CCC officers.

Phishing is a technique for attempting to acquire sensitive data through a fraudulent solicitation in email, in which the perpetrator masquerades as a legitimate business or reputable person.

Spear phishing uses much more compelling messages than standard phishing attacks. For example, attackers who claim to be the CCC president could attempt to trick officers and members into sending money to their bank accounts.

CCC officers will not request that you purchase gift cards, pay invoices, or otherwise request you to make payments via payment services such as Venmo or Zelle.

CCC officers also can’t send email with their officer email address. If you receive email from, for example, president@ , it literally can’t be from the CCC president.

 

When in doubt, pick up your phone and call. And note that with recent AI advances, voice mimicry is not far behind…
