Event Type

Curious to know where there are good surfing spots on the Nantahala River? Do paddlers still do that?

Meet in the NOC Lot by 1030 am on April 13 with your 2024 River Pass, ready to run shuttle. Get your pass at NOC or ERA when they open if you don’t already have one.

Paddling from Wayah Road Putin back down to NOC. Roughly 8 miles.

This is NOT intended to be a First Time Paddling the Nantahala trip.

Dress for the weather. The weather could be 70 degrees and sunny, or 50 degrees and overcast. The water will be it’s usual, chilly 50 degrees. Water level – Recreational flow plus whatever runoff there may be.

Bring your favorite boat for surfing river waves. I hear “Half Slice” is all the rage now. I’ll be in my old RPM Max.

I will show you the waves where you can typically surf. Some are “Catch on The Fly” waves, so we won’t be able to eddy out each time. Some of the waves require hitting a one or two boat eddy first. We’ll need to keep our intervals. Many waves are the “One and Done” type.

Helmet, PFD, Flotation Required.

Wetsuit with DryTop or Drysuit recommended. (Plus your usual safety gear load out)

Bring water and snacks for brief lunch stop at Surfers Rapid

Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.
