Nolichucky Poplar Boat Launch temporarily closes Feb. 18

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is partnering with the National Forest Foundation to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch, which provides access to the Nolichucky River. The launch, located on the Pisgah National Forest, was damaged by Hurricane Helene.

“We are excited to begin work to rebuild the Poplar Boat Launch, a cherished spot on our forest where folks can recreate and enjoy the outdoors,” said Appalachian District Ranger Jennifer Barnhart. “These improvements will enhance safety and accessibility for local residents, visitors and the outfitting community, ensuring the Nolichucky River remains a treasured resource for outdoor recreationists in the years to come.”

New renderings describe the vision for the project, which will improve flood resiliency and restore recreational access to the Nolichucky River. The site is anticipated to open later in the spring 2026
