Haw River cleanup

Participants: John McDonald, Randy Welch, Jen Fahey, Barry Schmidt, Julie Schmidt, Marc Harkness, Joan Monnig, Greta Durbin, Marlow Durbin, Doug Stager, Mary Stager, Russ Sheve, Lynn Featherstone, Brenda Featherstone, Tom Patterson, Larry Ausley, Bob Brueckner.

Thanks to 17 fellow CCC members, the Haw will be a little cleaner the next time you visit.

Cans and bottles were collected from the party island upstream of the Bynum dam. The hammock and trash were removed from the hobo camp on an island downstream of the dam. And in case you misplaced it, we found your frog gig.

Club members who participated in the Haw River Assembly's annual cleanup on Saturday, March 17, brought in 53 bags of trash and three tires. Larry Ausley found four bags of trash earlier in the week between the Robeson Creek canoe access and the last rapid on the Lower Haw.

For a cleanup operation like this to work, you need boaters on the water and a solid support crew on land. We had both. Lynn and Brenda Featherstone shuttled canoes and carried trash from a collection points to the trash bin in their truck. Tom Patterson also hauled bags to the trash bin. Russ Scheve carried bags of trash from shore to the parking lot at the U.S. 15-501 access area.

Special thanks also goes to Joan Monnig for feeding the worn-out crew a scrumptious St. Patrick's Day feast of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and Lucky Charms cereal.

After dinner, Marc Harkness' mandolin and banjo playing provided a nice conclusion for a long day.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out on Saturday.

Bob Brueckner
