ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Alamance County has acquired nearly 800 acres of land in southern Alamance County, a move that will significantly extend the Haw River State Trail and the North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail, county officials announced.

The property includes most of the historic “Alston Quarter” tract, the largest remaining undivided parcel in Alamance County. Located south of Saxapahaw at the confluence of the Haw River and Cane Creek, the land will allow for the construction of about three additional miles of trail and create new opportunities for outdoor recreation, conservation and environmental stewardship.

The acquisition was funded through a combination of state and local sources, including the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, the Complete the Trails Grant Program, Alamance County Landfill Enterprise Funds and a donation from Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

County officials said planning, design and future public access improvements will be evaluated as part of ongoing trail development efforts in coordination with state and regional partners.
