This annual event has been going on since at least the early 2000’s. If you are interested in joining, please contact Ron Ray at ronaldaray@verizon.net.
The general format is that we rent ski houses in Canaan Valley (Davis) WV from Friday evening April 23 through Sunday morning May 2, 2027. We do multiple day trips from there. Cheat, forks of Cheat, North Branch Potomac, South Branch as well as North Fork SB and South Fork SB. More options if water is good. Lots of Class II and II/III water. Plus there’s mountain biking and hiking in the Dolly Sods and Monongahela National Forest. The last weekend is Cheat Fest.
A usual day is the group dithering by text during breakfast and coffee, then settling on several runs. Go paddle, come back to own rooms, hot showers, hot tubs, and socializing. Each house group-cooks for dinner, and food is usually very good. Good night’s sleep in your own room, then repeat. We also do a Margarita Night and last-night Fun with Leftovers with the whole group.
The group is getting older and could use some new folks. Plus we’ve also eased away from harder water like Tygart, Middle Fork, Big Sandy, etc.
The issue for me as the organizer is how many houses do I rent. Last year, we had 3 houses for 25 rooms, and I only anticipate 1 or 2 folks not returning. If there is enough serious interest, I’ll rent another house, but I need to decide by fall. Cost likely will be in the range of $800 to $900 for the room. Most rooms have queens or kings, and a very few have twin. Price is for the room, whether you bring someone else or not. I won’t have exact prices until I know how many and which houses we’ll be renting, and what next season’s rates will be. So I’m trying to figure out demand NOW.
If you may be interested, please contact me at [ronaldaray@verizon.net](mailto:ronaldaray@verizon.net), early. I can give you more info, and possibly some attendees that you know. Waiting to decide and trying to get in close to the trip dates likely won’t work.
All participants in any Carolina Canoe Club (CCC) trip do so as common adventurers. The CCC or its individual members may coordinate paddling trips but no one is considered leader of a trip. As common adventurers, all participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether it is safe for them to participate on any particular water body, what equipment they need and use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are adequate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.
Individual coordinators for all CCC activities set requirements per their sole discretion. The CCC does not necessarily endorse or approve requirements set by coordinators.
