Event Type

ACA Swiftwater Rescue

The ACA SWR course lasts 16 to 20 hours and is physically challenging. It covers accident prevention and management, hazard recognition, self-rescue, wading and swimming, basic and advanced rope rescue techniques, unpinning and extrication, entrapment rescues, and use of swiftwater rescue vests.

The first day of the course is spent learning techniques on land; the second day is spent in the water, learning more techniques and practicing material learned on Saturday. Participants should be comfortable swimming in class II+ water and be ready to spend lots of time in the water. Participants will need a PFD, helmet, paddle, WARM CLOTHES, throw rope and minimal rescue gear (a locking carabineer, a prussic and webbing, which can be loaned to you if needed). Warm paddling clothes are essential because students will spend lots of time in the water. Many people find an SWR class to be their coldest paddling experience.

All participants in any Carolina Canoe Club (CCC) trip do so as common adventurers. The CCC or its individual members may coordinate paddling trips but no one is considered leader of a trip. As common adventurers, all participants take the responsibility for making their own decisions including, but not limited to, whether it is safe for them to participate on any particular water body, what equipment they need and use, the routes they may choose to paddle, whether their skill levels and abilities are adequate for the activity or whether climate and water conditions are appropriate for their participation. Participants are exclusively responsible for their own safety.

Individual coordinators for all CCC activities set requirements per their sole discretion. The CCC does not necessarily endorse or approve requirements set by coordinators.
